Introduction This work stems from the need to make care provision by healthcare professionals working in interventional cardiology laboratories safe and homogeneous. There is no Italian document in the scientific literature regarding safety and care in interventional cardiology laboratories. Objective To realize state-of-the-art on adopting and using the safety/checklist in the twenty-two interventional cardiology laboratories of the Region of Sicily. All this is done to guarantee the safety of care and to produce a document that can promote good technical and care practices within the laboratories. Methods A multicentre observational study was carried out using a specific survey administered via an online platform. Results The results obtained from the multicentric survey show that of the twenty-two laboratories in the Region of Sicily, 19 (86.4%) use a safety/checklist for the safety of care, and of the person assisted, only three laboratories (13.6%) do not have such a tool. The safety/checklists used in the various laboratories are customized for 68.2%, 22.7% use the Ministerial checklist, and only 9.1% do not use it. 72.7% of the laboratories use company-authorized safety/checklists, and 27.3% use them but are not authorized by the company. All this leads to a lack of standardization and homogeneity in the provision of care and treatment. From the data extrapolated from this survey and given the favorable opinion of the 22 laboratories, it is deemed necessary to create and share a safety/checklist at the regional level that encompasses the Ministerial checklist, based on the WHO ‘Guidelines for Surgery’ recommendations within the ‘Safe Surgery Saves Lives’ campaign (2008) to guarantee adequate levels of quality and safety, procedural information and professional nursing-technical work. Conclusions A single tool that can be shared by all interventional cardiology laboratories and that can testify to the work of healthcare professionals' needs.
